I have been asked several times about building some base drivers to run a couple of 3-500Z's and 3CX800-1500 boxes. I can't really compete with KLV but still some want a US built amp so I finally gave in. I will be building a two tube 6550 driver that I just received an order for. These are the same tubes used in a Black Cat 440 Special. It used four 6550's. They will be modulators (grid driven) and available in the 6550 or 6KG6-EL509 tubes. Thes are class AB1 amplifiers with a low dead-key and a ton of swing. A two tube like the one mentioned is the maximum reccomended for a pair of 3-500Z's. The low dead-key will be aorund 75 watts and the high around 120 watts with a 400+ PEP. This with a variable power with one knob tuning. After looking over the list prices for some solid state bases I feel more comfortable in doing these now. I will be building the four models below; Model 75 (1) 6550 or 6KG6 tube Model Super 75 (2) 6550 or 6KG6 tubes The Brute (3) 6550 or 6KG6 tubes 440 Special II (4) 6550 or 6KG6 tubes Power switch with lamp SSB switch Standby Switch with driver key position Receive amp switch Variable power Load control (1 knob tuning) Modulation/transmit lamp Key jack for keying the driven amp. Optional Relative power meter Switched plate voltage 115 Vac wall current I will be listing these when possible on the website. Any thoughts on these or ideas let me know. craxd1@ezwv.com

How about populating them with 6pi45C Svetlanas. Much easier to find, and 1/3 the price of those 6KG6 USA NOS, or pulls.

238, Thats what they (6KG6's) really are. I use the Ei brand (EL509) made in Yougoslavia as I've had better luck with them. Ei makes the ones for RM's KLV amps. The Ei version also costs less than the Svetlana tubes and as good as or better quality. If you remember the old 20LF6's in the Kenrich Eagles, they were made by Ei also. They wern't available for years due to the inport ban but now are available in any quantity. My supplier in New Jersy stock hundreds of these.

Sounds like a darn good amp Will.I like your amps a lot better than KLV amps.Yours are much tougher and better built.I would rather pay a little more and get an amp that will last me many years.
The 6KG6 /EL509 are very easy to find and fairly cheap.Thats why KLV uses them.I like the Svetlana tubes.
These are RF Parts prices!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 6KG6 /EL509-MQ Russian Matched Quad 99.80 6KG6 /EL509-M3 Russian Matched 3 67.35 6KG6 /EL509-MP Russian Matched Pair 49.90

I can't fib about the price I pay for them but they cost me $15.95 each plus shipping for 25 or less. They're about $14 in large quantities. You can buy these at Westgate Laboratories (Westgate Parts) in New Jersy. This used to be Elmira Electronics who was the Westinghouse tube people from several years back. The employees bought out Elmira when Westinghouse quit the tube and transistor replacement market. I can put the Svetlana's in but there's really no gain to it. They're charging for matching the tubes which is required in push-pull amps, especially tube typ guitar amplifiers as Fender and Ampeg who still use tubes. Running them Paralell with leveling resistors like I do don't really need that mutch of a match. I do test every lot with a B&K 707 mutual conductance tube tester. This works like a Hickok tester and allows you to match tubes by their conductance as if they were in circuit operating. Other testers only check a tube like a diode to see if it conducts. If I could find a good deal on a B&K 747 tester I would get one. It was the last model they produced in a black plastic case. Actually the 747 is an updated 707 cosmetticly and went to a solid state amplifier in the tester. I'll have a new price list for the distributors on the distributor page as soon as possible for the driver amps.

Will, Thanks for the info; those are good prices on matched units. I converted my 6LQ6 Kris to the 6pi45C, but didn't know the EL509 was a better tube, and available locally (USA). I paid 13.00 ea. for 3, but the shipping from KW Tubes in Lithuania was high. He claims they are the same tube, but I'll believe you. 73, P
